Getting Your HVAC Ready for Spring

As we write this, winter is still in full force. Believe it or not, the cold temperatures make it a perfect time to think about your air conditioning. A bit of careful preparation ahead of time will ensure your HVAC system makes an easy transition between the seasons, and a quick call to Ace Plumbing Heating and Air Conditioning can help with the rest.

Preparing Your Furnace

Before too long, you’ll have a window of opportunity when it’s not quite cold enough for heat, nor quite hot enough to run your air conditioning. Take full advantage of that time, and start by preparing your furnace for the summer. Yes, it’s sitting idle, but there are still some simple steps to keep it healthy while it hibernates. If it has a traditional pilot light, it can be worthwhile to shut off the gas supply altogether. If it uses electrical ignition, it should still be cleaned and serviced. Doing it now means that when the cold weather rolls ‘round again, you’re already ready. It also means that if furnace repairs are needed (or if you need a new furnace), you’ve got plenty of lead time.

Preparing your Air Conditioning

Once you’ve taken care of your furnace, it’s time to turn your attention to your central air.

Change Filters

It’s easy to forget to change your filters, so here’s your reminder. Whether you use forced air heat, or if your AC is the only thing running on those ducts, it’s always a good idea to start the season with a fresh filter. Your system will run better, and your indoor air quality will also be helped considerably.

Time for Spring Cleaning

A lot of dirt, dust, and debris collects on, around, and in your system even when it’s not in use. With that in mind, take the time to clean up inside and out. Indoors, take time to clean around your registers and returns, and have your ducts cleaned if it’s been a while. Outdoors, remove the cover (preferably after you’ve done your first outdoor cleanup of the season so the cover takes the brunt of the dirt) and inspect the unit for rust and damage. Once you’ve done that, make sure there’s adequate clearance around the unit (nearby plants and shrubs may need to be trimmed back) and that the unit is free of dirt and pollen. Obstructions — even small ones — can impede efficiency.

Check Your Drainage

When your air conditioner is running, condensation forms. That water cannot be allowed to sit, since it will cause mold, mildew, and rust. Drains should be clear, and water should be drained well away from the unit.

Test Your Air Conditioner

Once you’ve completed the steps above, it’s time to test the system. Turn the thermostat down low enough that the air conditioner starts. If it doesn’t, it may be time for a new thermostat (an a good time to invest in a smart thermostat while you’re at it), or you may need to call us for air conditioner repair. Either way, you won’t want to find out on the first hot day of the year!
